Is six years old too late to train a dog? Sadie’s family wondered the same thing. Their Lab is, in their words, their baby, and they were nervous about sending her to a board and train. Today they are glad they did. Sadie is one of our favorite reminders at Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville that an adult dog can still learn a new way to move through the world.
You can read Sadie’s full review on Google – her family’s gratitude comes through in every line.
Where Sadie Started
Sadie was reactive and excitable. That made everyday outings stressful, and walks left her family anxious and on edge. There were places they simply did not think they could take her.
The Training Journey
Sadie worked with our trainer Lauren in the Board & Train program. Lauren did two things at once: she taught Sadie, and she taught Sadie’s people how to manage that reactivity themselves. Her family noticed how much Lauren cared about Sadie and how committed she was to making her a little better every day.
The support did not stop at pickup. Lauren stayed in touch afterward, checking in to see how both Sadie and her owner were doing.
Sadie’s Wins
Her family can now take Sadie places they “never imagined possible”: dinner on the Downtown Mall, the park, farmers markets. They can walk her without being constantly stressed and anxious. For a dog who used to react to the world, that is a very different life.

What It Changed for Her Family
Sadie gets to come along now. Instead of planning around her reactivity, her family plans outings with her in mind, and they have the skills to handle the moments that used to derail a walk.
Why Sadie’s Story Matters
Many owners of adult dogs assume the window has closed. Sadie was six. Her story shows that reactivity can be managed at any age when the dog gets clear structure and the family learns the same skills the trainer uses. That hand-off to the family is a core part of how we work at Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville.
