Some of our proudest moments at Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville come from families who trust us twice. Logan’s family first sent their 18-month-old pup Bruce through our 2-Week Board & Train program and saw so much positive change that a few months later, they brought us a much harder case: Harley, their 5-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix.
You can read Harley’s full review on Google – everything below comes straight from her family’s experience.
Where Harley Started
Harley came to her family as a rescue, carrying trauma and abuse from before her adoption four years earlier. That history made her fiercely protective of her people. If a stranger came within five feet, she would react. She lunged, barked, and pulled on the leash. And at five years old, she was stubborn – long past the easily impressionable puppy stage.
The Training Journey
Our trainer Tyla had already worked with Bruce, but she knew Harley’s case needed a different approach. Instead of running the same playbook, Tyla spent real time building trust with Harley first, then focused on her confidence – especially out in public, around people and other dogs. Patience was the tool that mattered most.
Harley’s Wins
The change her family describes says it all: Harley no longer lunges, barks, reacts, or pulls on the leash. She listens and waits for her cues. She’s eager to please. And she’s now working toward reliable off-leash skills – something that felt impossible for a dog who once couldn’t let a stranger get close.

What It Changed for Her Family
Walks used to be stressful and uncomfortable. Now her family calls them relaxing, fun, and mentally stimulating for both dogs. They’re even working toward walking Harley and Bruce together in command, with just one person handling both. And Tyla is still in their corner – cheering on updates and sharing advice long after training ended.
Why Harley’s Story Matters
Harley proves two things we see every week at Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville: a rescue dog’s past doesn’t have to write her future, and age is not a barrier to real change. Older dogs with hard histories can learn to feel safe – it just takes the right approach and the patience to build trust first.
