Anyone who has owned a German Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois knows the truth about them: they are brilliant, they are relentless, and they will run your household if you let them. Riot is both breeds. He came to Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville at nine months old.
You can read Riot’s full review on Google – his owners do not undersell what he was like.
Where Riot Started
Riot counter surfed. He jumped on people. On leash he dictated the walk, pulling his owners wherever he decided to go.
The bigger problem was off leash, where he simply could not be trusted. His prey drive was strong enough that he would chase anything that moved, and he had no recall to bring him back. For a powerful young working dog, that is not a manners issue. That is a safety issue.
The Training Journey
Riot went through our 2-Week Board & Train program with trainer Tyla, who works extensively with working breeds and knows what drives them. High-drive dogs do not need that drive suppressed. They need a job, clear rules, and a handler whose word means something.
Tyla also trained the humans. His owners specifically credit her with teaching them how to use the commands properly so they could unlock what Riot was actually capable of – because a trained dog with untrained owners does not stay trained for long.
Riot’s Wins
The counter surfing stopped completely. If he starts to jump on someone, one “off” command ends it immediately.
The headline result is off leash. His owners describe having complete freedom with him now: when they call him, he comes running back right away. On the rare occasion he does need to be leashed, the heel command puts him at their side and keeps him there until they release him.

What It Changed for His Family
His owners went from managing a dog who made the decisions to having a companion they can genuinely take places. In their words, Tyla changed their lives for the better.
Why Riot’s Story Matters
Powerful working breeds get surrendered every day by good owners who were never given the tools. Riot did not need to be a different dog – he needed structure equal to his intelligence and drive. That reliable off-leash freedom came through board and train, where he could build those skills daily with a professional before they were handed over to his family. It is one of the most rewarding kinds of work we do at Off Leash K9 Training Charlottesville.
